RUN TURKEY TROT FOR YOUR MIDDLE OR ELEMENTARY SCHOOL!
Kent Vann Partners in Excellence Awards – Be a GWTC Turkey Trot Youth Strider
If you start Thanksgiving Day running in the Turkey Trot races to help your school, just think how good you will feel eating that great Thanksgiving Day food. Not only can your school win a trophy, it can also win cash awards. When you register for Turkey Trot, just your school name in the drop down menu in the Eventbrite online registration.
The middle school and elementary school to have the most points for finishers in the Thanksgiving Day races will win $300 and a trophy to display. Schools receive 2 points for every student and teacher of the school who finishes one of the races and one point for every family member or school employee who finishes either race. Schools must have a minimum of 30 points to win top prizes. Second place teams will win $150 if they have 25 points or more. All teams with 20 or more points will receive special recognition.
We also want to recognize the top middle and elementary school donating canned goods or clothing that is good shape to be worn. The schools that bring the most donations for friends in need will receive $300.
Running is a year round sport, so Striders don’t wait for Thanksgiving. Keep a watch for our “bonus days.” We will have special events between now and Thanksgiving where you can earn bonus points for the Turkey Trot Striders competition. For example – be part of Rex Cleveland Magic! Mile run over the bridge at Cascades Park and then down the new and beautiful trail along FAMU Way on November 3. Whatever donations you bring to this event, will count toward your Turkey Trot Totals.
Every Thanksgiving morning we love watching runners from the area middle and elementary schools compete for the Kent Vann Awards. Kent Vann was one special person, who loved running, photography and GWTC. It is his spirit of giving that we remember through this program. And please note the Turkey Trot Youth Strider competition is part of Gulf Winds Track Club’s efforts to keep our youth involved all year in running and exercise! Keep watch for more. Kent Vann was a member of GWTC until cancer took his life in 1996. Few people exemplify the Spirit of Thanksgiving more than this special person. Teams competing for this award should email Amy Hines or David Yon to register their team. The top team will receive a trophy and a gift certificate for a night out at a place to be announced. Participants should fill in their school name when they register.
All Registered Teams will receive:
- 4 weeks of running training plans for students K-8
- A customizable chart for tracking each student’s progress
- Free entry to the Turkey Trot Festival Kids’Tune Up Run at Cascades Park on Sunday,November 20
- A special invitation to participate in the Pep Rally at the Turkey Trot Festival
- A chance to win up to$1000 for your school
- A bag of goodies to promote healthy living
In both the Elementary and Middle School Category 1st and 2nd Place Awards will be given for:
Most Participants (including teaches, parents, and friends): $300 and $200
Must have at least 30 participants to qualify for the 1st place award.
Must have at least 20 participants to qualify for the 2nd place award.
Most Canned Goods: $300 and $200
